On Friday, August 31, 2018, Senator McCain will lie in state at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. A formal ceremony will take place in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda with Senate and House Leaders at approximately 11:00am ET to honor Senator McCain’s life and service to the nation.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, a Capitol Police Guard of Honor will preside as the public is invited to pay their respects to Senator McCain as he lies in state for the remainder of the day. More information will be provided about the public viewing. Please check back for updates.
Guidance Note: First elected to the House of Representatives in 1982, Senator McCain served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986. He revered the Senate and has called his time in office, “the most important job I have had in my life.”
